GP Rating refers to General Purpose Rating, where candidates are trained to work in both the Deck and Engine Room departments of a merchant ship. Based on company requirements, GP Rating candidates may be deployed in either department and perform a wide range of shipboard duties.

GP Rating is a 6-month residential pre-sea training course, approved by the Director General of Shipping (Government of India). The syllabus combines both Deck and Engine subjects, covering all essential aspects of a seafaring career.

After training, candidates appear for an external examination conducted by the Board of Examination of Seafarers (BES) under DG Shipping.
Candidates who successfully clear the BES examination are issued an Indian Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) and are eligible to join ships worldwide.
